| Careless PeopleSarah Wynn-WilliamsFlatiron Books-11-03-2025400 pagesDescription: An explosive memoir charting one woman’s career at the heart of one of the most influential companies on the planet, Careless People gives you a front-row seat to Facebook, the decisions that have shaped world events in recent decades, and the people who made them. From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite. Sarah Wynn-Williams tells the wrenching but fun story of Facebook, mapping its rise from stumbling encounters with juntas to Mark Zuckerberg’s reaction when he learned of Facebook’s role in Trump’s election. She experiences the challenges and humiliations of working motherhood within a pressure cooker of a workplace, all while Sheryl Sandberg urges her and others to “lean in.” Careless People is a deeply personal account of why and how things have gone so horribly wrong in the past decade—told in a sharp, candid, and utterly disarming voice. A deep, unflinching look at the role that social media has assumed in our lives, Careless People reveals the truth about the leaders of Facebook: how the more power they grasp, the less responsible they become and the consequences thi...9781250391230C1Biografie, lettere e memorie ,Non FictionCategories: Women's Biographies,Scientist Biographies,High-Tech Industry Format: Hardcover Language: en Pages Read: 207 |

| Stormy LifeMemories of a Pioneer of the Air AgeErnst HeinkelE.P.Dutton & CO-01-01-1956256 pagesDescription: The eventful, personal story of a man who, for almost fifty years, has been one of the world's foremost aircraft designers and builders, having to his credit not only the best of the early monoplanes but also the first fully operative jet. Heinkel first realized that the future of flight lay in the heavier-than-air plane when, at twenty, he saw the German dirigible LZ4 crash and burn before his eves. Soon after he became a profes- sional designer, and the victory of one of his seaplanes in an international race brought him into prominence even be- fore World War I. That war brought out his abilities in full measure. His Heinkel monoplane, the W29, wrested from England her air superiority over the Channel; his multi-engined Hansa-Bran- denburg ZM bomber was the first war plane to be armed with a cannon. And even though postwar Germany was forbidden to build aircraft, he went right on, working under cover and sell- ing military planes to foreign buyers, in- cluding Japan and even the U.S., as well as his own government. Secretly work- ing with him were such famous men as Kesselring, Student, Udet and Jeschon- nek, who used to visit his plant in plain clothes, using aliases. Heinkel developed the Night Hawk (an early American mail plane), the first catapult plane, and in 1935, began to work with Werner von Braun on rocket propelled and jet planes. He was the first to use rocket power in flight, and produced the world's first jet plane to fly in 1939. When the Nazis came to power, Heinkel, financed by the Luftwaffe, did much to build up Germany's air strength. But he had little respect for the Nazi High Command, and tells how their obsession with dive bombers and short-range de- fensive fighters, and consequent neglect of the long-range bomber, contributed to Germany's downfall in World War Il, As one of the most dynamic of the Ger- man industrialists, as well as a great airplane designer, Heinkel knew person- ally the top political figures from the Kaiser WilhelmL1Aeronautica ,Biografie, lettere e memoriePages Read: 256 |

| The Forgotten SoldierWar on the Russian Front, a True StoryGuy SajerCassell & Co. Ltd.-15-07-1999560 pagesDescription: This book recounts the horror of World War II on the eastern front, as seen through the eyes of a teenaged German soldier. At first an exciting adventure, young Guy Sajer’s war becomes, as the German invasion falters in the icy vastness of the Ukraine, a simple, desperate struggle for survival against cold, hunger, and above all the terrifying Soviet artillery. As a member of the elite Gross Deutschland Division, he fought in all the great battles from Kursk to Kharkov. His German footsoldier’s perspective makes The Forgotten Soldier a unique war memoir, the book that the Christian Science Monitor said "may well be the book about World War II which has been so long awaited." Now it has been handsomely republished as a hardcover containing fifty rare German combat photos of life and death at the eastern front. The photos of troops battling through snow, mud, burned villages, and rubble-strewn cities depict the hardships and destructiveness of war. Many are originally from the private collections of German soldiers and have never been published before. This volume is a deluxe edition of a true classic.9780304352401L1Biografie, lettere e memorie ,StoriaCategories: Biography: Historical, Political & Military,European History,20th Century History: C 1900 To C 2000 Format: Paperback Language: en Pages Read: 560 |

Minutino, gracile persino, dall’aspetto quasi inadatto a quel mestiere. Non ci volle molto per ricrederci. Quanta furia era racchiusa in quel piccolo essere. Già dalle prime prove rimasi sconcertato, spaccava tutto. | Account RenderedA Dossier on My Former SelfMelita MaschmannPlunkett Lake Press-24-05-2016296 pagesDescription: "Account Rendered" was first published in Germany in 1963 as "Fazit: Kein Rechtfertigungsversuch" or "Account Rendered: No attempt at justification." Maschmann wrote to Hannah Arendt that her intent in writing this memoir was to help her former Nazi colleagues think about their actions, and to help others "better understand" why people like her had been drawn to Hitler. Written as a letter to an unnamed Jewish girl, this memoir details the trajectory of a socially-conscious, well-educated, middle-class girl as she joins the Hitler Youth, supervises the eviction of Polish farmers from their land and works in the high echelons of Nazi press and propaganda. Arrested in 1945 at the age of 33, Maschmann completed mandatory de-Nazification and became a freelance journalist. This edition includes a new introduction explaining how the Publishers identified Maschmann's high school Jewish friend, Marianne Schweitzer Burkenroad, born in 1918 and located her in California. In an afterword, she recounts for the first time her friendship with Maschmann and her reactions to Account Rendered. "["Account Rendered" is an] important document of its time [...] I have the impression that you are totally sincere, otherwise I wouldn't have written back to you." - letter from Hannah Arendt to Melita Maschmann "[A] soul-searching record in which [Melita Maschmann] attempts to state and understand her guilt as a Nazi... her account here is intelligent and convincing." - Kirkus Reviews "There weren'...9780961469641L1Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Biography: General,Fascism & Nazism,Political Structures: Totalitarianism & Dictatorship Translators: Geoffrey Strachan Format: Paperback Language: en Pages Read: 296 |

| Fino all'ultima ora.

E poche sono state altrettanto determinanti.

| Frederick the Great: King of PrussiaTim BlanningPenguin-06-10-2016648 pagesDescription: Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, dominated the 18th century in the same way that Napoleon dominated the start of the 19th - a force of nature, a caustic, ruthless, brilliant military commander, a monarch of exceptional energy and talent, and a knowledgeable patron of artists, architects and writers, most famously Voltaire. From early in his reign he was already a legendary figure - fascinating even to those who hated him. Tim Blanning's brilliant biography recreates a remarkable era, a world which would be swept away shortly after Frederick's death by the French Revolution. Equally at home on the battlefield or in the music room at Frederick's extraordinary miniature palace of Sanssouci, Blanning draws on a lifetime's obsession with the 18th century to create a work that is in many ways the summation of all that he has learned in his own rich and various career. Frederick's spectre has hung over Germany ever since: an inspiration, a threat, an impossible ideal - Blanning at last allows us to understand him in his own time.9780141039190C1Storia,Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Biography: Historical, Political & Military,Biography: Royalty,European History Format: Paperback Language: en Pages Read: 28 |

Attenzione. | Tuxedo Park: A Wall Street Tycoon and the Secret Palace of Science That Changed the Course of World War IIA Wall Street Tycoon and the Secret Palace of Science That Changed the Course of World War IIJennet ConantSimon Schuster-06-05-2003330 pagesDescription: The untold story of an eccentric Wall Street tycoon and the circle of scientific geniuses he assembled before World War II to develop the science for radar and the atomic bomb. Together they changed the course of history. Legendary financier, philanthropist, and society figure Alfred Lee Loomis gathered the most visionary scientific minds of the twentieth century—Albert Einstein, Werner Heisenberg, Niels Bohr, Enrico Fermi, and others—at his state-of-the-art laboratory in Tuxedo Park, New York, in the late 1930s. He established a top-secret defense laboratory at MIT and personally bankrolled pioneering research into new, high-powered radar detection systems that helped defeat the German Air Force and U-boats. With Ernest Lawrence, the Nobel Prize–winning physicist, he pushed Franklin Delano Roosevelt to fund research in nuclear fission, which led to the development of the atomic bomb. Jennet Conant, the granddaughter of James Bryant Conant, one of the leading scientific advisers of World War II, enjoyed unprecedented access to Loomis’ papers, as well as to people intimately involved in his life and work. She pierces through Loomis’ obsessive secrecy and illuminates his role in assuring the Allied victory.9780684872889L1Scienza e Tecnologia ,Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Biography: General,Biography: Business & Industry,Biography: Arts & Entertainment Format: Paperback Language: en Pages Read: 330 |

| Design for FlightThe Kurt Tank storyHeinz ConradisMacdonald & Co-01-01-1960240 pagesDescription: Design for Flight is the story of German aviation during twenty-five eventful years, as reflected in the career of a remarkable man who is also one of the world's leading aero- nautical designers- Professor Kurt Tank, He rose to be head of the famous Focke-Wulf company, and with the coming of war turned his talents to producing military aircraft whose names were known the world over; notably, the Fw 190, the fastest and most highly mancuvrable operational fighter of its day. During these war years Tank crossed swords with many of the Nazi leaders, including Hitler and Goring, and the book embodies his views on why the Luftwaffe failed, together with a critical assessment of the parts played by the Russian and American air forces, as well as our own R.A.F. Yet despite an impressive and still increas- ing record of achievement, Tank as an indi- vidual has remained little known outside his own particular world. Dr. Heinz Conradis is exceptionally well qualified to write his bio- graphy, for not only was he closely associated with Tank at Focke-Wulf over a period of years, but as a practising engineer himself he is able to present the technical side of Tank's work in terms casily grasped by the layman. Design for Flight is a book that will fascinate both the expert and the amateur aviation enthusiast. There are numerous illustrations, including many photographs of great his- torical interest. | Leonardo Da VinciWalter IsaacsonSimon & Schuster Ltd-18-10-2018624 pagesDescription: Based on thousands of pages from Leonardo's astonishing notebooks and new discoveries about his life and work, Walter Isaacson weaves a narrative that connects his art to his science. He shows how Leonardo's genius was based on skills we can improve in ourselves, such as passionate curiosity, careful observation, and an imagination so playful that it flirted with fantasy. He produced the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and technology. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry. His ability to stand at the crossroads of the humanities and the sciences, made iconic by his drawing of Vitruvian Man, made him history's most creative genius9781471166785L1Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Biography: Arts & Entertainment,Biography: Historical, Political & Military,Biography: Science, Technology & Engineering Format: Paperback Language: en Pages Read: 624 |

| Doom GuyJohn RomeroHarry N Abrams Inc-08-11-2022288 pagesDescription: The inspiring, long-awaited autobiography of video game designer and DOOMcocreator John RomeroDOOM Guy: Life in First Personis the long-awaited autobiography of John Romero, gaming’s original rock star and the cocreator of DOOM, Quake, and Wolfenstein—some of the most recognizable and important titles in video game history. Credited with the invention of the first-person shooter, a genre that continues to dominate the market today, he is gaming royalty. Told in remarkable detail, a byproduct of his hyperthymesia, Romero recounts his storied career—from his early days submitting Apple II code to computer magazines and sneaking computers out of the back door of his day job to do programming projects at night in his garage to a high-profile falling out with his id Software cofounder John Carmack, as well as his continued role in the gaming industry today as the managing director of Romero Games Ltd. His story is truly one of a self-made man, founding multiple companies after a childhood filled with violence and abuse drove him to video game design, where he could create new worlds and places to escape to. An alcoholic father, a racist grandfather who did not approve of Romero’s parents’ mixed-race coupling, and a grandmother who once ran a brothel in Mexico combine for an illuminating story his youth—a story that has never before been revealed. After years in the gaming spotlight, Romero is now telling his story—THE WHOLE STORY—in his own words.9781419758119L1Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Biography: Business & Industry,Biography: Arts & Entertainment,Games Strategy Guides Format: Hardcover Language: en Pages Read: 288 |

| Commandant Of AuschwitzRudolf Höss,Primo LeviWeidenfeld & Nicolson-05-07-2000256 pagesDescription: An extraordinary and unique document: Hoess was in charge of the huge extermination camp in Poland where the Nazis murdered some three million Jews, from the time of its creation (he was responsible for building it) in 1940 until late in 1943, by which time the mass exterminations were half completed. Before this he had worked in other concentration camps, and afterwards he was at the Inspectorate in Berlin. He thus knew more, both at first-hand and as an administrator, about Nazi Germany's greatest crime than did any save two or three other men. Taken prisoner by the British, he was handed over to the Poles, tried, sentenced to death, and taken back to Auschwitz and there hanged. During the period between his trial and his execution, he was ordered to write his autobiography. This is it. Hoess repeatedly says he was glad to write the book. He enjoyed the work. And finally the most careful checking has shown that he took great pains to tell the truth. Here we have, painted by his own hand, a vivid and unforgettable self-portrait of one of the great monsters of all time. To this are added portraits of some of his more spectacular fellow-criminals. The royalties from this macabre but historically important book go to the fund set up to help the few survivors from the Auschwitz camps.9781842120248L1Biografie, lettere e memorie ,StoriaCategories: Biography: Historical, Political & Military,Autobiography: Historical, Political & Military,European History Translators: Constantine Fitzgibbon Format: Paperback Language: en Pages Read: 256 |

| Ken Tyrrell. | The Invention of the Automobile - (Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler)St. John C. NixonEdizioni Savine-01-01-2017160 pagesDescription: “ . My excuse for writing this book is a desire to ventilate certain facts in relation to the early work of Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler of which the public is largely ignorant. Among those who have taken the trouble to investigate the early days of the motor movement, there is a certain amount of controversy as to who invented the motor vehicle, although this question has not, at the moment, extended to the general public. Inevitably it will do so, if the prevailing interest increases, in which event, it is hoped that this book will prove useful, for all the dates and facts, etc., have been fully authenticated. There are, however, several to whom I must express my sincere gratitude for the assistance they have given me. Herr Rudolf Caracciola, the winner, during the 1935 season of motor racing, of the Grand Prix of France, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, and Tripoli, to say nothing of other triumphs, and therefore the Champion of Europe, has most kindly written a preface after reading through the manuscript. The Daimler-Benz Aktiengesellschaft of Germany has been indefatigable in providing me with material in regard to certain facts connected with the early experiments of both Benz and Daimler. Mr. Frederick R. Simms, too, has spared no effort to help me with some of the inner details of Daimler’s engineering career.” ( ST. John C. | Boeing's Ed WellsMary Wells GeerUniversity of Washington Press-01-01-1992179 pagesDescription: "In 1943, as Boeing chief engineer, Wells supervised construction and improvements of the even larger B-29 Superfortress, which carried the war to the Japanese homeland and eventually dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. With the advent of jet aviation, Ed led the team that designed the B-52 bomber and its commercial counterparts, the Boeing 707, 727, and 747. During his long career he educated generations of Boeing engineers in his standards. "It was the character of the man, that if you ever had been associated with him you always felt he was your mentor," said T. Wilson, longtime chairman of the board at Boeing. "Ed Wells never encouraged me to do anything for the short-term company gain."" "In a field full of flamboyant personalities, Wells was distinguished not only by his genius, but by his modesty and his unfailing calm. Although his achievements were widely known - Wells was posthumously inducted into the Aviation Hall of Fame in 1991 - his many outside interests and his robust pleasure in life were until now familiar only to family and friends." "Boeing's Ed Wells draws on Wells's personal and business papers to give a complete portrait of what one of his colleagues called "this incredible man." His story, written by his sister is also the story of a remarkable American family."--BOOK JACKET.9780295972046L1Aeronautica ,Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Technology & Engineering Format: Hardcover Language: en Pages Read: 179 |

| Larry, a Biography of Lawrence D. BellDonald J. NortonRowman & Littlefield Publishers-01-01-1981260 pagesDescription: Larry Bell attended school in Mentone until 1907 when his family moved to Santa Monica, California. In 1912, a month before Larry was to graduate from Santa Monica Polytechnic, he joined with great stunt pilot Lincoln Beachey as a mechanic. Larry then went to work for the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company, where, by age 20, he was shop foreman. Within a few years he became vice president and general manager of the Martin Company. In 1928, he joined Consolidated Aircraft in Buffalo, New York, as general manager. In 1935, Larry Bell formed the Bell Aircraft Corporation that designed and produced a number of innovative military aircraft. Bell’s outstanding success is attributed to the many firsts that he achieved. In 1942 he produced the first U.S. jet-powered fighter aircraft, and his continued innovative design projects include the high-speed research aircraft X-1, which became the first aircraft to fly faster than the speed of sound in 1947. The Bell Model 47, which initially flew in December 1945, was the first commercial helicopter to achieve U.S. approval. Bell also produced the first vertical take-off and landing jet airplane. Since then, thousands of Bell helicopters have been produced for civil and military operations throughout the world. During his career, Larry Bell has been honoured with the Daniel Guggenheim Medal (1944), the Collier trophy (1948), the French Legion of Honor (1950), a presidential citation, and honorary degrees. Since then it has been a prime mover for civilization, and today much of the world depends on it as a source of power. Nowhere, perhaps, is it in more widespread use than in America, where the word “diesel” is a part of our language. Rudolf Diesel: Pioneer of the Age of Power is the first English-language publication of Rudolph Diesel’s biography. Authors W. Robert Nitske and Charles Morrow Wilson offer a warm and moving account of Diesel from the time of his birth in Paris in 1858 to his mysterious death in 1913. Manco a pensarci...

Come ci riuscì?

| My Forty Years with FordCharles E. SorensenWayne State University Press-01-01-2006345 pagesDescription: In My Forty Years with Ford, Charles Sorensen-sometimes known as "Henry Ford's man," sometimes as "Cast-iron Charlie"-tells his own story, and it is as challenging as it is historic. He emerges as a man who was not only one of the great production geniuses of the world but also a man who called the plays as he saw them. He was the only man who was able to stay with Ford for almost the full history of his empire, yet he never hesitated to go against Ford when he felt the interests of the company demanded it. When labor difficulties mounted and Edsel's fatal illness was upon him, Sorensen sided with Edsel against Henry Ford and Harry Bennett, and he insisted that Henry Ford II be brought in to direct the company despite the aging founder's determination that no one but he hold the presidential reins. First published in 1956, My Forty Years with Ford has now been reissued in paperback for the first time. The Ford story has often been discussed in print but has rarely been articulated by someone who was there. Here Sorensen provides an eyewitness account of the birth of the Model T, the early conflicts with the Dodge brothers, the revolutionary announcement of the five-dollar day, and Sorensen's development of the moving assembly line-a concept that changed our world. Although Sorensen conceived, designed, and built the giant Willow Run plant in nineteen months and then proceeded to turn out eight thousand giant bombers, his life's major work was to make possible the vision o...9780814332795L1Automobile,Biografie, lettere e memorie19-02-2014 - 02-03-2014Categories: Biography: Business & Industry,Memoirs,Road Vehicle Manufacturing Industry Format: Paperback Language: en Pages Read: 345 |

| The Extraordinary Life of Josef Ganz: The Jewish Engineer Behind Hitler's VolkswagenPaul SchilperoordRvp Publishers-15-12-2011352 pagesDescription: The astonishing biography of Josef Ganz, a Jewish designer from Frankfurt, who in May 1931 created a revolutionary small car: the Maikafer (German for May bug). Seven years later Hitler introduced the Volkswagen. He not only 'took' the concept of Ganz's family car, he even used the same nickname. To this day the VW Beetle or Bug is considered one of the most important of all automobile designs. It incorporated many of the features of Ganz's original Maikafer, yet until recently Ganz received no recognition for his pioneering work. The Nazis did all they could to keep the Jewish godfather of the German compact car out of the history books. Now Paul Schilperoord sets the record straight. In a biography that reads like a spy thriller, he tells how Ganz was imprisoned by the Gestapo, until an influential friend with connections to Gaoring helped secure his release. Soon afterwards he was forced to flee Germany while Porsche created the Volkswagen for Hitler using many of his groundbreaking ideas. Ganz was hunted by the Nazis even beyond Germany's borders and narrowly escaped assassination. After the war he moved to Australia, where he died in 1967. This biography is a great read for anyone interested in World War II, Jewish history, the evolution of car design or simply the life stories of extraordinary individuals.9781614122012L1Biografie, lettere e memorie ,AutomobileFormat: Hardcover Pages Read: 352 |

| Sloan RulesAlfred P. Sloan and the Triumph of General MotorsDavid FarberUniversity of Chicago Press-15-11-2002330 pagesDescription: Alfred P. Sloan Jr. became the president of General Motors in 1923 and stepped down as its CEO in 1946. During this time, he led GM past the Ford Motor Company and on to international business triumph by virtue of his brilliant managerial practices and his insights into the new consumer economy he and GM helped to produce. Bill Gates has said that Sloan's 1964 management tome, My Years with General Motors, "is probably the best book to read if you want to read only one book about business." And if you want to read only one book about Sloan, that book should be historian David Farber's Sloan Rules. Here, for the first time, is a study of both the difficult man and the pathbreaking executive. Sloan Rules reveals the GM genius as not only a driven manager of men, machines, money, and markets but also a passionate and not always wise participant in the great events of his day. Sloan, for example, reviled Franklin Roosevelt and the New Deal; he firmly believed that politicians, government bureaucrats, and union leaders knew next to nothing about the workings of the new consumer economy, and he did his best to stop them from intervening in the private enterprise system. He was instrumental in transforming GM from the country's largest producer of cars into the mainstay of America's "Arsenal of Democracy" during World War II; after the war, he bet GM's future on renewed American prosperity and helped lead the country into a period of economic abundance. | Chrysler: The Life and Times of an Automotive GeniusVincent CurcioDescription: Walter P. Chrysler was a man who loved machines, an accomplished mechanic who also had highly developed managerial skills derived from half a lifetime on the railroads, and whose success came from his deep understanding of engineering and his total commitment to the quality of his vehicles. Here, Vincent Curcio presents a richly detailed account of one of the most important men in American automotive history, based on full access to both Chrysler Corporation and Chrysler family historical records. Curcio traces Chrysler's rise from a locomotive wiper in a Kansas roundhouse to his rescue of the Maxwell-Chalmers car company, which led to the successful development of the 1924 Chrysler--the world's first modern car--and the formation of Chrysler Corporation in 1925. Chrysler was quite different from the other auto giants--a colorful and expansive man deeply involved in the design of his cars, he established his headquarters in New York City and built the world's most famous art deco structure, the fabled Chrysler Building. Because of his emphasis on quality at popular prices, the company weathered the Great Depression with flying colors and remained profitable right up to Chrysler's death in 1940. The definitive portrait, Chrysler is a must read for all car enthusiasts and for everyone interested in the story of a giant of industry9780195078961B1Biografie, lettere e memorie ,Automobile |

Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) was a prophet of the electronic age. His research laid much of the groundwork for modern electrical and communication systems, and his impressive accomplishments include development of the alternating-current electrical system, radio, the Tesla coil transformer, wireless transmission, and fluorescent lighting. Tesla's research was so groundbreaking that many of his contemporaries failed to understand it, and other scientists are unjustly credited for his innovations. The visionary scientist speaks for himself in this volume, originally published in 1919 as a six-part series in Electrical Experimenter magazine. Tesla recounts his boyhood in Croatia, his schooling and work in Europe, his collaboration with Thomas Edison, and his subsequent research. Written with wit and lan, this memoir offers fascinating insights into one of the great minds of modern science. | Born Standing Up: A Comic's Lifea comic's lifeSteve MartinScribner Book Company-29-02-2008207 pagesDescription: In the midseventies, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. This book is, in his own words, the story of "why I did stand-up and why I walked away." Emmy and Grammy Award winner, author of the acclaimed New York Times bestsellers Shopgirl and The Pleasure of My Company, and a regular contributor to The New Yorker, Martin has always been a writer. His memoir of his years in stand-up is candid, spectacularly amusing, and beautifully written. At age ten Martin started his career at Disneyland, selling guidebooks in the newly opened theme park. In the decade that followed, he worked in the Disney magic shop and the Bird Cage Theatre at Knott's Berry Farm, performing his first magic/comedy act a dozen times a week. The story of these years, during which he practiced and honed his craft, is moving and revelatory. The dedication to excellence and innovation is formed at an astonishingly early age and never wavers or wanes. Martin illuminates the sacrifice, discipline, and originality that made him an icon and informs his work to this day. To be this good, to perform so frequently, was isolating and lonely. It took Martin decades to reconnect with his parents and sister, and he tells that story with great tenderness. Martin also paints a portrait of his times-the era of free love and protests against the war in Vietnam, the heady irreverence of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour...9781416553649L3Biografie, lettere e memorie18-12-2022 - 23-12-2022Categories: Autobiography: Arts & Entertainment Format: Hardcover Language: en Pages Read: 207 |

Toklas, and James and Nora Joyce. In this haunting account of the young Hemingways, Gioia Diliberto explores their passionate courtship, their family life in Paris with baby Bumby, and their thrilling, adventurous relationship—a literary love story scarred by Hadley’s loss of the only copy of Hemingway’s first novel and ultimately destroyed by a devastating ménage à trois on the French Riviera. | Hemingway in LoveHis Own StoryA.E. HotchnerPan MacMillan-01-01-2015Description: In June of 1961, A.E. Hotchner visited an old friend in the psychiatric ward of St. Mary's Hospital. It would be the last time they spoke: a few weeks later, Ernest Hemingway was released home, where he took his own life. Their final conversation was also the final installment in a story whose telling Hemingway had spread over nearly a decade. In characteristically pragmatic terms, Hemingway divulged to Hotchner the details of the affair that destroyed his first marriage: the truth of his romantic life in Paris and how he lost Hadley, the real part of each literary woman he'd later create and the great love he spent the rest of his life seeking. And he told of the mischief that made him a legend: of impotence cured in a house of God; of a plane crash in the African bush, from which he stumbled with a bunch of bananas and a bottle of gin in hand; of F. Scott Fitzgerald dispensing romantic advice; of midnight champagne with Josephine Baker; of adventure, human error, and life after lost love. This is Hemingway as few have known him: humble, thoughtful, and full of regret. To protect the feelings of Ernest's wife, Mary - also a close friend - Hotch kept the conversations to himself for decades. Now he tells the story as Hemingway told it to him. "Hemingway in Love "puts you in the room with the master as he remembers the definitive years that set the course for the rest of his life and dogged him until the end of his days.9781447299899L2Letteratura Narrativa e Poesia ,Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Biography: Literary,Memoirs Format: Hardcover Language: en |

| Papa HemingwayA.E. HotchnerMercure de France-01-01-1966381 pagesDescription: Between 1948 and 1961, Earnest Hemingway and A. E. Hotchner traveled together from New York to Paris to Spain, fished the waters off Cuba, hunted in Idaho, and ran with the bulls in Pamplona. And everywhere they talked. For 14 years, Hotchner and Hemingway shared a conversation. Hemingway reminisced about his childhood, recalled the Paris literary scene in the twenties, remembered his early years as a writer, and recounted the real events that lay behind his fiction. And Hotchner took it all down. His notes on the many occasions he spent with his friend Papa - in Venice and Rome, in Key West, on the Riviera, in Ketchum, Idaho, where Hemingway died by his own hand in 1961 - provide the material for this utterly truthful, profoundly compassionate bestselling memoir of the Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author. What emerges is an extraordinary portrait of a great writer who had, and determined, the time of his life.L2Biografie, lettere e memorie ,Letteratura Narrativa e PoesiaPages Read: 381 |

| Full of Life: A Biography of John FanteStephen CooperAngel City Press-01-08-2005400 pagesDescription: In the definitive biography of John Fante, English and film studies professor Stephen Cooper explores the life of a man whose muse was Los Angeles. If ever a writer presented an enigma to the literary world, it was Fante—who grappled at once with brilliance and cruelty, yet presented a talent that has been equated with that of America’s finest writers. From his home near L.A.’s Bunker Hill and his days filled with frustration, rage and love, Fante’s life is at one with his characters’ lives, but Cooper pinpoints the parallels and the divergences. Fante had a mighty effect upon me . . . Fante was my god. —Charles Bukowski The best literary biographies always bring you back to the work, and Stephen Cooper’s Full of Life certainly does that. I read it all at once, on fire with its feeling for a man who lived as hard and full as he wrote. Cooper does justice to Fante. —Thom Jones, author of The Pugilist at Rest Fante lived and wrote first in this beautiful, taxing, still-being-born city. What he left us is invaluable. And Stephen Cooper has respectfully magnified this legacy by giving us this truly terrific biography. —Carolyn See Stephen Cooper received his MFA in Creative Writing from the University of California, Irvine, and his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. I’ll Say She Is! He is ultra competitive but never forgets to have fun. An immensely likeable man.' Damon Hill The world’s foremost designer in Formula One, Adrian Newey OBE is arguably one of Britain’s greatest engineers and this is his fascinating, powerful memoir. How to Build a Car explores the story of Adrian’s unrivalled 35-year career in Formula One through the prism of the cars he has designed, the drivers he has worked alongside and the races in which he’s been involved. A true engineering genius, even in adolescence Adrian’s thoughts naturally emerged in shape and form – he began sketching his own car designs at the age of 12 and took a welding course in his school summer holidays. From his early career in IndyCar racing and on to his unparalleled success in Formula One, we learn in comprehensive, engaging and highly entertaining detail how a car actually works. Adrian has designed for the likes of Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill, David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, always with a shark-like purity of purpose: to make the car go faster. And while his career has been marked by unbelievable triumphs, there have also been deep tragedies; most notably Ayrton Senna’s death during his time at Williams in 1994. | Ferdinand Porsche and the Legacy of GeniusLaurence MeredithBank House Books-26-05-2010268 pagesDescription: When Ferdinand Porsche was born Europe was peaceful, developing, capitalist and largely feudal. Britain was the world's only true 'superpower', and America would not emerge as an economic giant for at least forty-five years. Motor cars, aircraft, television, computers, ballpoint pens and other modern conveniences didn't exist. Ninety-five years after Porsche's arrival in the world, cars bearing his name were in action at Le Mans, their 4.5-litre 12-cylinder air-cooled engines propelling them to speeds of 240mph. Conventional wisdom dictated that air-cooling was unsuited to high-speeds. Under the inspired leadership of three generations of the family, Porsche proved, and continues to prove, that traditional rules are there to be broken. With more than a score of books to his credit on the great German marques, Laurence Meredith brings a unique authority to this, his eighth Porsche-related work, and the first to examine the prime movers and master engineers behind this most hallowed of motoring icons.9781904408673G1Automobile,Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Biography: General,Black & Asian Studies,Road & Motor Vehicles Format: Hardcover Language: en Pages Read: 268 |

| Roy D. ChapinThe Man Behind the Hudson Motor Car CompanyJohn Cuthbert Long,Charles K. Hyde01-01-1945269 pagesDescription: "John Cuthbert Long’s Roy D. Chapin is a thorough and detailed biography of a remarkable, but little-known Detroit automobile industry pioneer. Historians should include Roy Dikeman Chapin (February 23, 1880–February 16, 1936) in any listing of significant American auto industry pioneers, along with the Duryea brothers, Ransom E. Olds, Henry Leland, Henry Ford, William C. Durant, and the Dodge brothers. Outside the cloister of automotive historians, Roy Chapin is an unknown. This is in part because no company or car bore his name. Unlike many contemporary auto pioneers, Roy Chapin was a modest man who did not promote himself. Even Long’s superb biography of Chapin is not well-known because it was privately printed in 1945 with a small press run. In reprinting this volume, Wayne State University Press is making an important contribution to automotive history." —From the introduction by Charles K. | The Strangest Man: The Hidden Life of Paul Dirac, Quantum GeniusThe Hidden Life of Paul Dirac, Quantum GeniusGraham FarmeloFaber Faber-24-12-2009539 pagesDescription: 'A monumental achievement - one of the great scientific biographies.' Michael Frayn The Strangest Man is the Costa Biography Award-winning account of Paul Dirac, the famous physicist sometimes called the British Einstein. He was one of the leading pioneers of the greatest revolution in twentieth-century science: quantum mechanics. The youngest theoretician ever to win the Nobel Prize for Physics, he was also pathologically reticent, strangely literal-minded and legendarily unable to communicate or empathize. Through his greatest period of productivity, his postcards home contained only remarks about the weather. Based on a previously undiscovered archive of family papers, Graham Farmelo celebrates Dirac's massive scientific achievement while drawing a compassionate portrait of his life and work. Farmelo shows a man who, while hopelessly socially inept, could manage to love and sustain close friendship. The Strangest Man is an extraordinary and moving human story, as well as a study of one of the most exciting times in scientific history. 'A wonderful book . . . Moving, sometimes comic, sometimes infinitely sad, and goes to the roots of what we mean by truth in science.' Until now, the man whose racing cars have won more victories than anyone else's, and whose design skills have brought fame to hundreds of drivers and made champions of a good many of them, has remained in the background.Ron Tauranac - British-born, but brought up in Australia - always preferred to let his cars sing his praises where it really mattered - on the race tracks of the world. They have never been known as Tauranacs, but the names Brabham and Ralt will be very familiar to anyone who has followed motor racing since the Sixties. And so, of course, is Honda, the company which supplied the engines for some of Tauranac's most successful Brabham and Ralt racing cars and with which he still retains close links as a design consultant, working behind the scenes on several of their motor racing activities.Sir Jack Brabham, in his foreword to this long overdue biography, pays generous tribute to his former business partner into whose hands he entrusted the design and construction of all his own racing cars from 1962 until his retirement from driving in 1970, plus all the production Brabhams which brought so much success to many other top drivers during their formative years. Many of Ron Tauranac's former colleagues and customers - amongst them the most powerful people in motor racing today - speak candidly about the man they have known and worked with, someone who has never courted popularity, but whose talents have been su...9781588501592G1Automobile,Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Motor Cars Format: Paperback Language: en Pages Read: 290 |

| The Fast Times of Albert ChampionFrom Record-Setting Racer to Dashing Tycoon, an Untold Story of Speed, Success, and BetrayalPeter Joffre NyePrometheus Books-01-01-2014462 pagesDescription: This is the first biography of the short but exciting life of Albert Champion-record-setting bicyclist and motorcyclist, daredevil race car driver, early automobile innovator with thirty US patents, charismatic ladies' man, and celebrity of the Jazz Age. Though most Americans have heard of the two companies he founded-Champion Spark Plug and ACDelco-few know much about the flamboyant man behind the companies. The book's lively narrative describes the many adventures of the Frenchman who rose from poverty in Paris to great wealth and fame in both his native France and the United States. As a bicycle racer, Champion set more than a hundred world records. When the urban speed limit was 8 mph, he was the first ever to drive a motorcycle a mile under a minute. Then a car-racing crash in Brooklyn snapped a leg bone that kept him in traction for eleven weeks. Handicapped but undeterred, he hobbled out of the hospital on crutches and recovered to win the French national cycling championship. He subsequently invested his prize money to become a tycoon in the American auto industry, working closely with the leading players in this new revolutionary industry. Good looking and a natty dresser, he was an incorrigible ladies' man, whose many dalliances finally ended in a love triangle that resulted in his death under mysterious circumstances.9781616149642G1Automobile,Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Biography & Autobiography Format: Hardcover Language: en Pages Read: 462 |

| First Principles: The Official Biography of Keith Duckworth OBEThe Official Biography of Keith DuckworthNorman BurrVeloce Publishing-01-07-2015352 pagesDescription: The names 'Keith Duckworth' and 'DFV' are practically synonymous, such is the reputation of the famous F1 racing engine which he designed. Whilst there are books covering the technical aspects of the DFV engine, and other designs from Cosworth, the company which he founded with Mike Costin, there are many gaps in the story of Duckworth's career, before and after Cosworth. This book comprehensively fills those gaps, taking the reader into the world of Britain's finest 20th century engineers. It was a world consisting of far more than motorsport, embracing an astonishing variety of mechnical devices, including aircraft, boats, and motorcycles - particularly Triumph, for whom he was a consultant during his retirement. A man of strong convictions and high integrity, Keith Duckworth OBE cared passionately about his work, fitting almost every aspect of his life around it. His northern industrial roots, the ups and downs of his personal life, his health problems, and his generous support of charities and business start-ups, combine to create the story of one of motorsport's - and engineering's - most endearing and enduring characters. | Hell-rider to King of the AirGlenn Curtiss's Life of InnovationKirk W. HouseMcFarland-01-01-2003304 pagesDescription: There's no question that Glenn Curtiss was one of the most significant figures in the early development of motorcycles, aviation, and engine development. This book will take you on a journey through both his life and his innovative technological developments. And what a life it was. Descriptions of this man prove to be contradictory and controversial. He was quiet, yet dashing. Kind, yet stern. Uneducated, yet a technological and entrepreneurial pioneer. He began his inventing career by building and racing motorcycles, while creating new internal combustion engines, then moved on to work with dirigibles, airplanes (particularly seaplanes), community development, and travel trailers. In the end, Glenn Curtiss - a man respected by contemporaries for his character - went to his grave accused of fiduciary irresponsibility and patent theft. His bitter patent disputes with the Wright Brothers leave many wondering whether Curtiss should be seen as a hero or a villain when his place in history is considered. Hell-Rider to King of the Air examines Curtiss's life, career, and accomplishments in an engaging and accessible way, so that readers can answer that question for themselves.9780768008029G1Aeronautica ,Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Biography & Autobiography Format: Paperback Language: en Pages Read: 304 |

| Steve JobsWalter IsaacsonSimon & Schuster-24-10-2011627 pagesDescription: From the author of the bestselling biographies of Benjamin Franklin and Albert Einstein, this is the exclusive, New York Times bestselling biography of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering. Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. After fifteen years of operating a successful automotive supplier company, much to Ford's advantage, John and Horace Dodge again changed the face of the automotive market in 1914 by introducing their own car. The Dodge Brothers automobile carried on their names even after their untimely deaths in 1920, with the company then remaining in the hands of their widows until its sale in 1925 to New York bankers and subsequent purchase in 1928 by Walter Chrysler. | Bismarck: A LifeA LifeJonathan SteinbergOxford University Press, USA-06-04-2011592 pagesDescription: This riveting, New York Times bestselling biography illuminates the life of Otto von Bismarck, the statesman who unified Germany but who also embodied everything brutal and ruthless about Prussian culture. Jonathan Steinberg draws heavily on contemporary writings, allowing Bismarck's friends and foes to tell the story. What rises from these pages is a complex giant of a man: a hypochondriac with the constitution of an ox, a brutal tyrant who could easily shed tears, a convert to an extreme form of evangelical Protestantism who secularized schools and introduced civil divorce. Bismarck may have been in sheer ability the most intelligent man to direct a great state in modern times. His brilliance and insight dazzled his contemporaries. But all agreed there was also something demonic, diabolical, overwhelming, beyond human attributes, in Bismarck's personality. He was a kind of malign genius who, behind the various postures, concealed an ice-cold contempt for his fellow human beings and a drive to control and rule them. As one contemporary noted: the Bismarck regime was a constant orgy of scorn and abuse of mankind, collectively and individually. In this comprehensive and expansive biography--a brilliant study in power--Jonathan Steinberg brings Bismarck to life, revealing the stark contrast between the Iron Chancellor's unmatched political skills and his profoundly flawed human character.9780199782529G1Biografie, lettere e memorie ,StoriaCategories: Biography: Historical, Political & Military,European History,20th Century History: C 1900 To C 2000 Format: Hardcover Language: en Pages Read: 592 |

| Panhard Levassor: Pioneers in Automobile ExcellencePioneers in Automobile ExcellenceDavid BeareAmberley Publishing-15-12-2017128 pagesDescription: Panhard & Levassor was a ground-breaking company whose innovations set the standard for modern motoring. Not only was it the first company to produce a vehicle with an internal combustion engine mounted at the head of the chassis rather than under the driver's seat, the entire 'Panhard' layout of engine, gearbox, shaft drive to rigid rear axle, set the standard which is still used today. As the author reveals, Panhard & Levassor can also claim to be the first manufacturer to sell cars commercially.Author David Beare follows the fortunes of the company and its two founders, the affable and portly René Panhard complementing the intelligent and somewhat haughty Émile Levassor. From the late 1800s through the two world wars, they continued to produce revolutionary designs, including sleeve valves, monocoque chassis units and the new economy cars with air-cooled flat-twin engines and bodies and chassis made largely of aluminium. As an important contributor to the design and performance of their subsequent road cars, Panhard & Levassor’s pioneering competition successes in early road-racing in the period from 1894 to 1903 are also covered, when the company was at the forefront of motor-racing technology and won many races. The story ends with the take-over of the company by Citroën, which ultimately absorbed the Panhard & Levassor creative genius into their own designs.9781445665344G1Automobile,Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Automobile engineers Format: Paperback Language: en Pages Read: 128 |

| Dean and Me(A Love Story)James Kaplan,Jerry LewisThree Rivers Press-10-10-2006352 pagesDescription: In a memoir by turns moving, tragic, and hilarious, Jerry Lewis recounts with crystal clarity every step of his fifty-year friendship with Dean Martin. They were the unlikeliest of pairs—a handsome crooner and a skinny monkey, an Italian from Steubenville, Ohio, and a Jew from Newark, N.J.. Before they teamed up, Dean Martin seemed destined for a mediocre career as a nightclub singer, and Jerry Lewis was dressing up as Carmen Miranda and miming records on stage. But the moment they got together, something clicked—something miraculous—and audiences saw it at once. Before long, they were as big as Elvis or the Beatles would be after them, creating hysteria wherever they went and grabbing an unprecedented hold over every entertainment outlet of the era: radio, television, movies, stage shows, and nightclubs. Martin and Lewis were a national craze, an American institution. The millions flowed in, seemingly without end—and then, on July 24, 1956, ten years after it all started, it ended suddenly. After that traumatic day, the two wouldn’t speak again for twenty years. And while both went on to forge triumphant individual careers—Martin as a movie and television star, recording artist, and nightclub luminary (and charter member of the Rat Pack); Lewis as the groundbreaking writer, producer, director, and star of a series of hugely successful movie comedies—their parting left a hole in the national psyche, as well as in each man’s heart. In Dean & Me, Lewis makes a convincing...9780767920872G1Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Arts & Entertainment,Personal Memoirs,Performing Arts Format: Paperback Language: en Pages Read: 352 |

| Car Guys vs. Bean CountersThe Battle for the Soul of American BusinessBob LutzPortfolio-09-06-2011256 pagesDescription: A legend in the car industry reveals the philosophy that's starting to turn General Motors around. In 2001, General Motors hired Bob Lutz out of retirement with a mandate to save the company by making great cars again. He launched a war against penny pinching, office politics, turf wars, and risk avoidance. After declaring bankruptcy during the recession of 2008, GM is back on track thanks to its embrace of Lutz's philosophy. When Lutz got into the auto business in the early sixties, CEOs knew that if you captured the public's imagination with great cars, the money would follow. The car guys held sway, and GM dominated with bold, creative leadership and iconic brands like Cadillac, Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, GMC, and Chevrolet. But then GM's leadership began to put their faith in analysis, determined to eliminate the "waste" and "personality worship" of the bygone creative leaders. Management got too smart for its own good. With the bean counters firmly in charge, carmakers (and much of American industry) lost their single-minded focus on product excellence. Decline followed. Lutz's commonsense lessons (with a generous helping of fascinating anecdotes) will inspire readers at any company facing the bean counter analysis-paralysis menace.9781591844006G1Automobile,Biografie, lettere e memorienull - 19-05-2013Categories: Business,Automobile Industry,Biography & Memoir Format: Hardcover Language: en Pages Read: 256 |

| Just One More ThingPeter FalkArrow Books-01-01-2008336 pagesDescription: Peter Falk came to prominence as an actor in 1956 in the highly successful off-Broadway revival of The Iceman Cometh with Jason Robards. Although he worked continuously for the next three years, bouncing from one off-Broadway theatre to the next, a theatrical agent advised him not to expect much work in motion pictures because of his glass eye. Later, a talent scout for Columbia Pictures described Falk as a second John Garfield, but Harry Cohn, the head of Columbia Pictures, unfortunately disagreed: 'For the same price, I can get an actor with two eyes.' But in 1958, Twentieth Century Fox came to New York to make a movie - Murder Inc - and Falk landed a juicy role for which he received rave reviews and, incredibly, was nominated for an Academy Award. He was then nominated again for his second film, Pocketful of Miracles starring Bette Davis. Falk went on to become a favourite among filmgoers, yet it was through television that he reached his widest audience as Lt. Columbo, winning four Emmys for the role. Interestingly, Columbo's raincoat came out of Falk's bedroom closet. He bought it years before he became an actor. He's been quoted as saying, 'I wanted to wear something people would remember. Bottom line, it's the world's most famous raincoat.' Just One More Thing is pure Peter Falk, and reads as if he were sitting next to you, chuckling as he recalls his remarkable past.9780099509554G1Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Individual Actors & Performers,Films, Cinema,Television Format: Paperback Language: en Pages Read: 336 |

| Fins: Harley Earl, the Rise of General Motors, and the Glory Days of DetroitHarley Earl, the Rise of General Motors, and the Glory Days of DetroitWilliam KnoedelsederHarper Business-18-09-2018320 pagesDescription: The New York Times bestselling author of Bitter Brew chronicles the birth and rise to greatness of the American auto industry through the remarkable life of Harley Earl, an eccentric six-foot-five, stuttering visionary who dropped out of college and went on to invent the profession of automobile styling, thereby revolutionized the way cars were made, marketed, and even imagined. Harleys Earl’s story qualifies as a bona fide American family saga. It began in the Michigan pine forest in the years after the Civil War, traveled across the Great Plains on the wooden wheels of a covered wagon, and eventually settled in a dirt road village named Hollywood, California, where young Harley took the skills he learned working in his father’s carriage shop and applied them to designing sleek, racy-looking automobile bodies for the fast crowd in the burgeoning silent movie business. As the 1920s roared with the sound of mass manufacturing, Harley returned to Michigan, where, at GM’s invitation, he introduced art into the rigid mechanics of auto-making. Over the next thirty years, he functioned as a kind of combination Steve Jobs and Tom Ford of his time, redefining the form and function of the country’s premier product. His impact was profound. When he retired as GM’s VP of Styling in 1958, Detroit reigned as the manufacturing capitol of the world and General Motors ranked as the most successful company in the history of business. | Preston Tucker and His Battle to Build the Car of TomorrowSteve LehtoChicago Review Press-01-04-2018272 pagesDescription: A 2017 Michigan Notable Book After World War II, the American automobile industry was reeling. Having spent years building tanks and airplanes for the army, the car companies would need years more to retool their production to meet the demands of the American public, for whom they had not made any cars since 1942. And then in stepped Preston Tucker. This salesman extraordinaire from Ypsilanti, Michigan, had built race cars before the war, and had designed prototypes for the military during it. Now, gathering a group of brilliant automotive designers, engineers, and promoters, he announced the creation of a revolutionary new car: the Tucker '48, the first car in almost a decade to be built fresh from the ground up. Tucker's car would include ingenious advances in design and engineering that other car companies could not match. With a rear engine, rear-wheel drive, a safety-glass windshielf that would pop out in case of an accident, a padded dashboard, independent suspension, and automatic transmission, it would be more attractive and aerodynamic—and safer—than any other car on the road. But as the public eagerly awaited Tucker's car of tomorrow, powerful forces in Washington were trying to bring him down. An SEC commissioner with close ties to Detroit's Big Three automakers deliberately leaked information about an investigation the agency was conducting, suggesting that Tucker was bilking investors with a massive fraud scheme. | Il genio dei numeri. Storia di John Nash, matematico e folleSylvia NasarRizzoli-01-01-1999441 pagesDescription: Stories of famously eccentric Princetonians abound—such as that of chemist Hubert Alyea, the model for The Absent-Minded Professor, or Ralph Nader, said to have had his own key to the library as an undergraduate. Or the "Phantom of Fine Hall," a figure many students had seen shuffling around the corridors of the math and physics building wearing purple sneakers and writing numerology treatises on the blackboards. The Phantom was John Nash, one of the most brilliant mathematicians of his generation, who had spiraled into schizophrenia in the 1950s. His most important work had been in game theory, which by the 1980s was underpinning a large part of economics. When the Nobel Prize committee began debating a prize for game theory, Nash's name inevitably came up—only to be dismissed, since the prize clearly could not go to a madman. But in 1994 Nash, in remission from schizophrenia, shared the Nobel Prize in economics for work done some 45 years previously. Economist and journalist Sylvia Nasar has written a biography of Nash that looks at all sides of his life. She gives an intelligent, understandable exposition of his mathematical ideas and a picture of schizophrenia that is evocative but decidedly unromantic. Her story of the machinations behind Nash's Nobel is fascinating and one of very few such accounts available in print (the CIA could learn a thing or two from the Nobel committees).9788817860321L1Scienza e Tecnologia ,Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Biography & Autobiography Translators: Carlo Capararo,Roberta Zuppet,Sergio Mancini Format: Hardcover Language: it Pages Read: 441 |

This book chronicles the story behind that historic event. Sir Frank Whittle, who eleven years earlier, at the age of 22, had applied for his patent for a turbo-jet engine, here sets on record his own pioneering work and that of the small company, Power Jets Ltd, which he helped to form in 1936 to develop the engine. The dreams of his youth were brought to fruition in an invention that not only revolutionised military aircraft but set Britain ahead of the world in civil aviation, bringing the inventor a knighthood at the age of 41. Written in non-technical language and drawing upon his own comprehensive diaries and correspondence, Sir Frank Whittle describes his hard and often bitter struggle with engineering problems, with financial difficulties and with the frustrations arising out of official policy, which came at great personal cost and which eventually led to the downfall of Power Jets. Jet: The Story of a Pioneer chronicles the pioneering work of Sir Frank Whittle and his determination to turn his idea into reality.L1Aeronautica ,Biografie, lettere e memorieFormat: Hardcover Pages Read: 320 |

Was he an unparalleled innovator or an uninhibited exploiter of the uncredited ideas of others? In this landmark book, celebrated author Karl Ludvigsen gets to grips with the legend, digging deep beneath the skin of Chapman and his cars to explore and expose the motivations that drove this mercurial and controversial genius. Interviews with key figures in the Chapman story mesh with information from the author’s extensive archives to make this book a unique and compelling encounter between the engineer-innovator and the historian-investigator. Conceiving concepts: assessment of the man whom Keith Duckworth described as ‘the most brilliant conceptual engineer I’ve known’. Engine enterprise: recognising that he was, in his words, ‘not an engine man’, Chapman made the best of engines available to him, whether Ford 1172 side-valve, BRM H-16, Cosworth DFV V8 or Pratt & Whitney gas turbine. Transmission topics: this chapter moves through Lotus-designed ‘Queerbox’ transaxles, four-wheel drive, automatic clutch actuation and much more. Suspension sagas: from makeshift suspension ingenuity on his first Austin-based special to espousal of active suspension just before his death, Chapman gained and exploited an advanced understanding of a car’s underpinnings. Veteran automotive historian David W. Temple has researched and unearthed the complete story of Harley Earl’s cars, his notable design achievements, and many accolades. Working as a coachbuilder at his father's Earl Automotive Works in Hollywood, California, the young Earl learned his trade. After styling the 1927 LaSalle for GM president Alfred P. Sloan, Earl rose to prominence and ran the newly created department of Art and Color. Automobile design stagnated during the Depression and World War II, but the number of his contributions to the automotive world in the 1950s is staggering. When the jet age hit, he fully embraced aviation design and infused it into GM cars. The Buick Y-Job and GM Le Sabre featured many firsts in automotive design and hardware. The Y-Job's fender extensions trailing over the doors, disappearing headlamps, flush door handles, a metal cover over the convertible top were a few innovations. When General Motors needed to show off its cars and technology, Harley Earl-designed cars were the...9781613252345L1Automobile,Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Transportation Format: Hardcover Language: en Pages Read: 193 |

Nigel also describes the story of the ‘Big Beast’ – the Mercedes pushrod engine that won the 1994 Indy 500. Sharing in detail his own view of the importance of suspension geometry, and how it deviates from present practices, this book also includes personal views on the Penske years from a number of motor sport figures, and those of a rival Indy car designer Bruce Ashmore. A fascinating first-hand behind-the-scenes insight. Included in the story is considerable detail of Nigel’s eight years spent with the Firestone European Racing Division, covering an area vital to racing car performance, plus the relationship between a tyre company and its leading contracted team. The 60s and 70s were rife with tyre wars, and many interesting stories unfolded during those decades. With descriptions of the importance of the Race Engineer to the driver, and to a team’s competitiveness, Nigel Bennett draws on his years of experience to offer detailed insight to how an engineer worked with a car and tuned its set-up in an era before computer readouts and telemetry came to dominate.9781845845360L1Automobile,Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Biography: General,Biography: Sport,Autobiography: Science, Technology & Engineering Format: Hardcover Language: en Pages Read: 176 |

| The Twelve Lives of Alfred HitchcockAn Anatomy of the Master of SuspenseEdward WhiteWW Norton-13-04-2021336 pagesDescription: A fresh, innovative biography of the twentieth century’s most iconic filmmaker. In The Twelve Lives of Alfred Hitchcock, Edward White explores the Hitchcock phenomenon—what defines it, how it was invented, what it reveals about the man at its core, and how its legacy continues to shape our cultural world. The book’s twelve chapters illuminate different aspects of Hitchcock’s life and work: “The Boy Who Couldn’t Grow Up”; “The Murderer”; “The Auteur”; “The Womanizer”; “The Fat Man”; “The Dandy”; “The Family Man”; “The Voyeur”; “The Entertainer”; “The Pioneer”; “The Londoner”; “The Man of God.” Each of these angles reveals something fundamental about the man he was and the mythological creature he has become, presenting not just the life Hitchcock lived but also the various versions of himself that he projected, and those projected on his behalf. From Hitchcock’s early work in England to his most celebrated films, White astutely analyzes Hitchcock’s oeuvre and provides new interpretations. He also delves into Hitchcock’s ideas about gender; his complicated relationships with “his women”—not only Grace Kelly and Tippi Hedren but also his female audiences—as well as leading men such as Cary Grant, and writes movingly of Hitchcock’s devotion to his wife and lifelong companion, Alma, who made vital contributions to numerous classic Hitchcock films, and burnished his mythology. And White is trenchant in his assessment of the Hitchcock persona, so carefully created that Hitchcoc...9781324002390L1Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Arts & Entertainment,Entertainment & Performing Arts,Film Format: Hardcover Language: en Pages Read: 336 |

Numerous biographies, novels, and films recount his mysterious rise to power as Nicholas and Alexandra's confidant and the guardian of the sickly heir to the Russian throne. His debauchery and sinister political influence are the stuff of legend, and the downfall of the Romanov dynasty was laid at his feet. But as the prizewinning historian Douglas Smith shows, the true story of Rasputin's life and death has remained shrouded in myth. A major new work that combines probing scholarship and powerful storytelling, Rasputin separates fact from fiction to reveal the real life of one of history's most alluring figures. Drawing on a wealth of forgotten documents from archives in seven countries, Smith presents Rasputin in all his complexity--man of God, voice of peace, loyal subject, adulterer, drunkard. Rasputin is not just a definitive biography of an extraordinary and legendary man but a fascinating portrait of the twilight of imperial Russia as it lurched toward catastrophe.9780374240844L1Biografie, lettere e memorie ,StoriaCategories: Biography: Historical, Political & Military,European History Format: Hardcover Language: en Pages Read: 848 |

| I Flew for the Fhrer: The Memoirs of a Luftwaffe Fighter PilotThe Memoirs of a Luftwaffe Fighter PilotHeinz KnokeGreenhill Books-11-12-2020208 pagesDescription: Heinz Knoke was one of the outstanding German fighter pilots of the Second World War. This vivid first-hand record of his experiences has become a classic among aviation memoirs and is a fascinating counterbalance to the numerous accounts written by Allied pilots. Knoke joined the Luftwaffe on the outbreak of war, and eventually became commanding officer of a fighter wing. An outstandingly brave and skillful fighter, he logged over two thousand flights and shot down fifty-two enemy aircraft. He had flown over four hundred operational missions before being wounded in an astonishing 'last stand' towards the end of the war. He was awarded the Knight's Cross for his achievements. In a text that reveals his intense patriotism and discipline, he describes being brought up in the strict Prussian tradition, the rise of the Nazi regime and his own wartime career set against a fascinating study of everyday life in the Luftwaffe. He also reveals the high morale of the force until its disintegration. His memoirs are both a valuable contribution to aviation literature and a moving human story.9781784386023L1Storia,Aeronautica ,Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Biography: Historical, Political & Military,Memoirs,European History Format: Paperback Language: en Pages Read: 208 |

| Agent Sonya: The True Story of WW2’s Most Extraordinary SpyMoscow's Most Daring Wartime SpyBen MacintyrePenguin-27-05-2021400 pagesDescription: The incredible story of the greatest female spy in history, from one of Britain's most acclaimed historians - available for pre-order now In a quiet English village in 1942, an elegant housewife emerged from her cottage to go on her usual bike ride. A devoted wife and mother-of-three, the woman known to her neighbours as Mrs Burton seemed to epitomise rural British domesticity. However, rather than pedalling towards the shops with her ration book, she was racing through the Oxfordshire countryside to gather scientific intelligence from one of the country's most brilliant nuclear physicists. Secrets that she would transmit to Soviet intelligence headquarters via the radio transmitter she was hiding in her outdoor privy. Far from a British housewife, 'Mrs Burton' - born Ursula Kuczynski, and codenamed 'Sonya' - was a German Jew, a dedicated communist, a colonel in Russia's Red Army, and a highly-trained spy. From planning an assassination attempt on Hitler in Switzerland, to spying on the Japanese in Manchuria, and helping the Soviet Union build the atom bomb, Sonya conducted some of the most dangerous espionage operations of the twentieth century. Her story has never been told - until now. Agent Sonya is the exhilarating account of one woman's life; a life that encompasses the rise and fall of communism itself, and altered the course of history. | The Wright BrothersDavid McCulloughSimon Schuster-03-05-2016336 pagesDescription: The #1 New York Times bestseller from David McCullough, two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize—the dramatic story-behind-the-story about the courageous brothers who taught the world how to fly—Wilbur and Orville Wright. On a winter day in 1903, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, two brothers—bicycle mechanics from Dayton, Ohio—changed history. But it would take the world some time to believe that the age of flight had begun, with the first powered machine carrying a pilot. Orville and Wilbur Wright were men of exceptional courage and determination, and of far-ranging intellectual interests and ceaseless curiosity. When they worked together, no problem seemed to be insurmountable. Wilbur was unquestionably a genius. Orville had such mechanical ingenuity as few had ever seen. That they had no more than a public high school education and little money never stopped them in their mission to take to the air. Nothing did, not even the self-evident reality that every time they took off, they risked being killed. In this “enjoyable, fast-paced tale” (The Economist), master historian David McCullough “shows as never before how two Ohio boys from a remarkable family taught the world to fly” (The Washington Post) and “captures the marvel of what the Wrights accomplished” (The Wall Street Journal). He draws on the extensive Wright family papers to profile not only the brothers but their sister, Katharine, without whom things might well have gone differently for them. Often called the greatest boxer of all time, he held world titles at four different weights, is the only boxer in history to have fought in five different decades, and his bouts with fellow greats like Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, and Marvin Hagler have gone down in fistic folklore. He finally retired in January of 2002, at age fifty-two, with a professional record of 104 wins (69 by KO) in 120 fights. They called him Manos de Piedra: “Hands of Stone.” Now journalist Christian Giudice has written the first—and definitive—story of Duran’s incredible life both in and out of the ring. He has interviewed the fighter, his family, closest friends, and scores of his opponents to separate truth from myth. Duran was born in utter poverty in Panama and grew up in the streets, fighting to survive. His talent with his fists soon emerged, and he had his first professional fight in 1967. Duran grew into a fighter’s fighter. His hunger to destroy opponents and his willingness to take on anyone, anywhere, made him a huge favorite while his flamboyant lifestyle outside the ring made headline news. From his heyday to the present moment, Al Capone—Public Enemy Number One—has gripped popular imagination. Rising from humble Brooklyn roots, Capone went on to become the most infamous gangster in American history. At the height of Prohibition, his multimillion-dollar Chicago bootlegging, prostitution, and gambling operation dominated the organized-crime scene. His competition with rival gangs was brutally violent, a long-running war that crested with the shocking St. Valentine’s Day Massacre of 1929. Law enforcement and the media elite seemed powerless to stop the growth of his empire. And then the fall: a legal noose tightened by the FBI, a conviction on tax evasion, Alcatraz. After his release he returned to his family in Miami a much diminished man, living quietly until the ravages of his neurosyphilis took their final toll. But the slick mobster persona endures, immortalized in countless novels and movies. The true flesh-and-blood man behind the legend has long remained a mystery. Unscrupulous newspaper accounts and Capone’s own tall tales perpetuated his mystique, but through dogged research Deirdre Bair debunks the most outrageous of these myths. With the help of Capone’s descendants, she discovers his essential humanity, u...9780385537155L1Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Historical,Criminals & Outlaws,20th Century Format: Hardcover Language: en Pages Read: 416 |

| Andre Lefebvre and the Cars He Created at Voisin and CitrodnGijsbert-Paul BerkVeloce Publishing-01-11-2009144 pagesDescription: Together with his colleagues at Citroën, Andre Lefebvre created the Traction Avant (1934), the TUB (1939) – Citroën's first front wheel drive utility van that was succeeded by the H and HY vans (1947) – the Deux Chevaux (1948), and, last but not least, the DS (1955). From 1923 to 1931 Lefebvre also designed several highly original and outstanding competition cars and record-breaking automobiles for Voisin. He even drove some these cars in races and record attempts. It is obvious that during his 16 years with Gabriel Voisin he was very much influenced by the ideas of this illustrious aviation pioneer and car manufacturer. The experience gained during that period gave him the self-confidence to persuade his successive bosses at Citroën that his unorthodox approach to automobile design was what the company needed; first he convinced André Citroën, later Pierre Michelin, then Pierre-Jules Boulanger, and finally Robert Puiseux and Pierre Bercot. His oeuvre for Citroën alone earns him a place of honour among the great automobile designers of the past century. The fact that most present-day cars still carry the DNA of his design philosophy makes him stand out above other automotive pioneers and innovators. That is why it is amazing that so little is known about this fascinating and brilliant engineer. Andre Lefebvre and the Cars He Created at Voisin and Citroën was written in order to remedy that, and to pay tribute to André Lefebvre: the passionate pioneer who left car enthu...9781845842444L1Automobile,Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Transportation Format: Hardcover Language: en Pages Read: 144 |

| Marx's GeneralThe Revolutionary Life of Friedrich EngelsTristram HuntPicador-03-08-2010464 pagesDescription: "Written with brio, warmth, and historical understanding, this is the best biography of one of the most attractive inhabitants of Victorian England, Marx's friend, partner, and political heir."—Eric Hobsbawm Friedrich Engels is one of the most intriguing and contradictory figures of the nineteenth century. Born to a prosperous mercantile family, he spent his life enjoying the comfortable existence of a Victorian gentleman; yet he was at the same time the co-author of The Communist Manifesto, a ruthless political tactician, and the man who sacrificed his best years so that Karl Marx could have the freedom to write. Although his contributions are frequently overlooked, Engels's grasp of global capital provided an indispensable foundation for communist doctrine, and his account of the Industrial Revolution, The Condition of the Working Class in England, remains one of the most haunting and brutal indictments of capitalism's human cost. Drawing on a wealth of letters and archives, acclaimed historian Tristram Hunt plumbs Engels's intellectual legacy and shows us how one of the great bon viveurs of Victorian Britain reconciled his exuberant personal life with his radical political philosophy. This epic story of devoted friendship, class compromise, ideological struggle, and family betrayal at last brings Engels out from the shadow of his famous friend and collaborator.9780805092486L1Biografie, lettere e memorie ,StoriaCategories: Biography & Autobiography Format: Paperback Language: en Pages Read: 464 |

| Ferrari rex.

| Alan Turing: The EnigmaAndrew HodgesWalker Books-01-03-2000608 pagesDescription: Alan Turing (1912-54) was a British mathematician who made history. His breaking of the German U-boat Enigma cipher in World War II ensured Allied-American control of the Atlantic. But Turing's vision went far beyond the desperate wartime struggle. Already in the 1930s he had defined the concept of the universal machine, which underpins the computer revolution. In 1945 he was a pioneer of electronic computer design. But Turing's true goal was the scientific understanding of the mind, brought out in the drama and wit of the famous "Turing test" for machine intelligence and in his prophecy for the twenty-first century. Drawn in to the cockpit of world events and the forefront of technological innovation, Alan Turing was also an innocent and unpretentious gay man trying to live in a society that criminalized him. In 1952 he revealed his homosexuality and was forced to participate in a humiliating treatment program, and was ever after regarded as a security risk. His suicide in 1954 remains one of the many enigmas in an astonishing life story.9780802775801da localizzareBiografie, lettere e memorie ,Scienza e TecnologiaCategories: Biography: Science, Technology & Engineering,Second World War,Mathematics Format: Paperback Language: en Pages Read: 608 |
