| Stormy LifeMemories of a Pioneer of the Air AgeErnst HeinkelE.P.Dutton & CO-01-01-1956256 pagesDescription: The eventful, personal story of a man who, for almost fifty years, has been one of the world's foremost aircraft designers and builders, having to his credit not only the best of the early monoplanes but also the first fully operative jet. Heinkel first realized that the future of flight lay in the heavier-than-air plane when, at twenty, he saw the German dirigible LZ4 crash and burn before his eves. Soon after he became a profes- sional designer, and the victory of one of his seaplanes in an international race brought him into prominence even be- fore World War I. That war brought out his abilities in full measure. His Heinkel monoplane, the W29, wrested from England her air superiority over the Channel; his multi-engined Hansa-Bran- denburg ZM bomber was the first war plane to be armed with a cannon. And even though postwar Germany was forbidden to build aircraft, he went right on, working under cover and sell- ing military planes to foreign buyers, in- cluding Japan and even the U.S., as well as his own government. Secretly work- ing with him were such famous men as Kesselring, Student, Udet and Jeschon- nek, who used to visit his plant in plain clothes, using aliases. Heinkel developed the Night Hawk (an early American mail plane), the first catapult plane, and in 1935, began to work with Werner von Braun on rocket propelled and jet planes. He was the first to use rocket power in flight, and produced the world's first jet plane to fly in 1939. When the Nazis came to power, Heinkel, financed by the Luftwaffe, did much to build up Germany's air strength. But he had little respect for the Nazi High Command, and tells how their obsession with dive bombers and short-range de- fensive fighters, and consequent neglect of the long-range bomber, contributed to Germany's downfall in World War Il, As one of the most dynamic of the Ger- man industrialists, as well as a great airplane designer, Heinkel knew person- ally the top political figures from the Kaiser WilhelmL1Aeronautica ,Biografie, lettere e memoriePages Read: 256 |

| Design for FlightThe Kurt Tank storyHeinz ConradisMacdonald & Co-01-01-1960240 pagesDescription: Design for Flight is the story of German aviation during twenty-five eventful years, as reflected in the career of a remarkable man who is also one of the world's leading aero- nautical designers- Professor Kurt Tank, He rose to be head of the famous Focke-Wulf company, and with the coming of war turned his talents to producing military aircraft whose names were known the world over; notably, the Fw 190, the fastest and most highly mancuvrable operational fighter of its day. During these war years Tank crossed swords with many of the Nazi leaders, including Hitler and Goring, and the book embodies his views on why the Luftwaffe failed, together with a critical assessment of the parts played by the Russian and American air forces, as well as our own R.A.F. Yet despite an impressive and still increas- ing record of achievement, Tank as an indi- vidual has remained little known outside his own particular world. Dr. Heinz Conradis is exceptionally well qualified to write his bio- graphy, for not only was he closely associated with Tank at Focke-Wulf over a period of years, but as a practising engineer himself he is able to present the technical side of Tank's work in terms casily grasped by the layman. Design for Flight is a book that will fascinate both the expert and the amateur aviation enthusiast. There are numerous illustrations, including many photographs of great his- torical interest. | Boeing's Ed WellsMary Wells GeerUniversity of Washington Press-01-01-1992179 pagesDescription: "In 1943, as Boeing chief engineer, Wells supervised construction and improvements of the even larger B-29 Superfortress, which carried the war to the Japanese homeland and eventually dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. With the advent of jet aviation, Ed led the team that designed the B-52 bomber and its commercial counterparts, the Boeing 707, 727, and 747. During his long career he educated generations of Boeing engineers in his standards. "It was the character of the man, that if you ever had been associated with him you always felt he was your mentor," said T. Wilson, longtime chairman of the board at Boeing. "Ed Wells never encouraged me to do anything for the short-term company gain."" "In a field full of flamboyant personalities, Wells was distinguished not only by his genius, but by his modesty and his unfailing calm. Although his achievements were widely known - Wells was posthumously inducted into the Aviation Hall of Fame in 1991 - his many outside interests and his robust pleasure in life were until now familiar only to family and friends." "Boeing's Ed Wells draws on Wells's personal and business papers to give a complete portrait of what one of his colleagues called "this incredible man." His story, written by his sister is also the story of a remarkable American family."--BOOK JACKET.9780295972046L1Aeronautica ,Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Technology & Engineering Format: Hardcover Language: en Pages Read: 179 |

| Larry, a Biography of Lawrence D. BellDonald J. NortonRowman & Littlefield Publishers-01-01-1981260 pagesDescription: Larry Bell attended school in Mentone until 1907 when his family moved to Santa Monica, California. In 1912, a month before Larry was to graduate from Santa Monica Polytechnic, he joined with great stunt pilot Lincoln Beachey as a mechanic. Larry then went to work for the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company, where, by age 20, he was shop foreman. Within a few years he became vice president and general manager of the Martin Company. In 1928, he joined Consolidated Aircraft in Buffalo, New York, as general manager. In 1935, Larry Bell formed the Bell Aircraft Corporation that designed and produced a number of innovative military aircraft. Bell’s outstanding success is attributed to the many firsts that he achieved. In 1942 he produced the first U.S. jet-powered fighter aircraft, and his continued innovative design projects include the high-speed research aircraft X-1, which became the first aircraft to fly faster than the speed of sound in 1947. The Bell Model 47, which initially flew in December 1945, was the first commercial helicopter to achieve U.S. approval. Bell also produced the first vertical take-off and landing jet airplane. Since then, thousands of Bell helicopters have been produced for civil and military operations throughout the world. During his career, Larry Bell has been honoured with the Daniel Guggenheim Medal (1944), the Collier trophy (1948), the French Legion of Honor (1950), a presidential citation, and honorary degrees. | Hell-rider to King of the AirGlenn Curtiss's Life of InnovationKirk W. HouseMcFarland-01-01-2003304 pagesDescription: There's no question that Glenn Curtiss was one of the most significant figures in the early development of motorcycles, aviation, and engine development. This book will take you on a journey through both his life and his innovative technological developments. And what a life it was. Descriptions of this man prove to be contradictory and controversial. He was quiet, yet dashing. Kind, yet stern. Uneducated, yet a technological and entrepreneurial pioneer. He began his inventing career by building and racing motorcycles, while creating new internal combustion engines, then moved on to work with dirigibles, airplanes (particularly seaplanes), community development, and travel trailers. In the end, Glenn Curtiss - a man respected by contemporaries for his character - went to his grave accused of fiduciary irresponsibility and patent theft. His bitter patent disputes with the Wright Brothers leave many wondering whether Curtiss should be seen as a hero or a villain when his place in history is considered. Hell-Rider to King of the Air examines Curtiss's life, career, and accomplishments in an engaging and accessible way, so that readers can answer that question for themselves.9780768008029G1Aeronautica ,Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Biography & Autobiography Format: Paperback Language: en Pages Read: 304 |

| JetThe Story of a PioneerFrank WhittleFrederick Muller Ltd-01-01-1953320 pagesDescription: On the evening of 15th May 1941, a small group gathered at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire to watch as the Gloster-Whittle E.28/39 made its maiden flight — Britain’s first jet-engined aeroplane. This book chronicles the story behind that historic event. Sir Frank Whittle, who eleven years earlier, at the age of 22, had applied for his patent for a turbo-jet engine, here sets on record his own pioneering work and that of the small company, Power Jets Ltd, which he helped to form in 1936 to develop the engine. The dreams of his youth were brought to fruition in an invention that not only revolutionised military aircraft but set Britain ahead of the world in civil aviation, bringing the inventor a knighthood at the age of 41. Written in non-technical language and drawing upon his own comprehensive diaries and correspondence, Sir Frank Whittle describes his hard and often bitter struggle with engineering problems, with financial difficulties and with the frustrations arising out of official policy, which came at great personal cost and which eventually led to the downfall of Power Jets. Jet: The Story of a Pioneer chronicles the pioneering work of Sir Frank Whittle and his determination to turn his idea into reality.L1Aeronautica ,Biografie, lettere e memorieFormat: Hardcover Pages Read: 320 |

In some ways a precursor to the 'stealth' concept, it was clearly ahead of its time when compared to its contemporaries. The Ho 229 was planned as the first of the next generation of German jet fighters to follow on from the Messerschmitt Me262, with the intention to create a high-speed cannon-equipped fighter-bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. Development involved design bureaus such as Goering, Galland, and Lippish, and flight testing began in December 1944. This book covers the Ho 229's development and operational record in detail and includes specially commissioned photographs of a surviving prototype, J3. | I Flew for the Fhrer: The Memoirs of a Luftwaffe Fighter PilotThe Memoirs of a Luftwaffe Fighter PilotHeinz KnokeGreenhill Books-11-12-2020208 pagesDescription: Heinz Knoke was one of the outstanding German fighter pilots of the Second World War. This vivid first-hand record of his experiences has become a classic among aviation memoirs and is a fascinating counterbalance to the numerous accounts written by Allied pilots. Knoke joined the Luftwaffe on the outbreak of war, and eventually became commanding officer of a fighter wing. An outstandingly brave and skillful fighter, he logged over two thousand flights and shot down fifty-two enemy aircraft. He had flown over four hundred operational missions before being wounded in an astonishing 'last stand' towards the end of the war. He was awarded the Knight's Cross for his achievements. In a text that reveals his intense patriotism and discipline, he describes being brought up in the strict Prussian tradition, the rise of the Nazi regime and his own wartime career set against a fascinating study of everyday life in the Luftwaffe. He also reveals the high morale of the force until its disintegration. His memoirs are both a valuable contribution to aviation literature and a moving human story.9781784386023L1Storia,Aeronautica ,Biografie, lettere e memorieCategories: Biography: Historical, Political & Military,Memoirs,European History Format: Paperback Language: en Pages Read: 208 |

| The Wright BrothersDavid McCulloughSimon Schuster-03-05-2016336 pagesDescription: The #1 New York Times bestseller from David McCullough, two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize—the dramatic story-behind-the-story about the courageous brothers who taught the world how to fly—Wilbur and Orville Wright. On a winter day in 1903, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, two brothers—bicycle mechanics from Dayton, Ohio—changed history. But it would take the world some time to believe that the age of flight had begun, with the first powered machine carrying a pilot. Orville and Wilbur Wright were men of exceptional courage and determination, and of far-ranging intellectual interests and ceaseless curiosity. When they worked together, no problem seemed to be insurmountable. Wilbur was unquestionably a genius. Orville had such mechanical ingenuity as few had ever seen. That they had no more than a public high school education and little money never stopped them in their mission to take to the air. Nothing did, not even the self-evident reality that every time they took off, they risked being killed. In this “enjoyable, fast-paced tale” (The Economist), master historian David McCullough “shows as never before how two Ohio boys from a remarkable family taught the world to fly” (The Washington Post) and “captures the marvel of what the Wrights accomplished” (The Wall Street Journal). He draws on the extensive Wright family papers to profile not only the brothers but their sister, Katharine, without whom things might well have gone differently for them.
